Navigating the Rough Seas of Business

In 2017 while dealing with debilitating illness caused by redlining I stumbled on this concept. The Dip Model is a three-part framework that helps individuals understand when they're in a difficult or challenging situation, and how to effectively overcome it.

  1. The Yearn Phase: This is the initial stage of a new venture, where chemistry is high and excitement is high, but clarity on the specifics is low. It's similar to the honeymoon phase, where everything is new and exciting, but the specifics of the work are not yet clear.

  2. The Earn Phase: This is the stage where the work begins and things start to get difficult. Clarity on the specifics is high, but chemistry and excitement may be low. It's important to recognize that this phase is normal and necessary for growth and progress, but it can be tempting to give up or to try to artificially create excitement in this phase.

  3. The Endure Phase: This is the stage where the work has been put in, and things start to come together. Clarity is high and chemistry is high, and the work becomes more effortless and enjoyable. This is the stage where you are in flow and can be creative without losing focus.

Imagine you're a sailor setting off on a journey. The first few days are exciting, the water is calm, and the wind is at your back. This is the Yearn Phase, where chemistry is high and clarity is low. It's like the honeymoon phase of a new venture. But soon enough, the water gets choppy, and the wind starts to pick up. This is the Earn Phase, where clarity is high, but chemistry is low. This is where the real work begins, and it can be tough to keep going. But if you stick with it, you'll eventually reach the Endure Phase, where the waters are calm and the wind is at your back once again. Clarity and chemistry are both high, and the journey becomes effortless and enjoyable.

Think of it like climbing a mountain. The first leg of the journey is the most exciting, with the summit in sight and the excitement of the unknown ahead. But as you start to climb, the path becomes steeper and the air thinner. You might start to wonder if you have what it takes to reach the top. But if you keep going, you'll eventually reach the summit where the view is breathtaking and the sense of accomplishment is worth all the hard work.

Or, think of it like baking a cake. The first step is mixing all the ingredients together, it's a fun and exciting process. But then comes the baking, where you just have to wait and put in the time for the cake to cook. This can be frustrating, but it's necessary for the final result, a delicious cake.

The Dip Model helps us understand that these difficult phases are a normal part of the journey, and that the key to success is to push through them. It's important to recognize when you're in the Earn Phase and to avoid trying to artificially create excitement, but instead to focus on the basics and keep working. And once you reach the Endure Phase, you can be creative and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

In conclusion, the Dip Model is a valuable tool for understanding and navigating the rough seas of life and business. Recognize the phase you're in and stay the course, and you'll eventually reach calm waters and a beautiful horizon.
